What Is a Pink Slip?
An eSafety Check is also known as a pink slip. If your car is 5 years or older, you need one every year before you can renew your registration in NSW.
This is a safety inspection that examines the key parts of your vehicle to ensure it’s safe to be on the road. These include your brakes, tyres, lights, steering, suspension, seatbelts, windscreen and exhaust. The mechanic is doing a check to ensure everything is up to the minimum safety standards set by Transport for NSW.
Pink slip inspections usually take around 20 to 30 minutes. Once you pass, electronically submitted to Service NSW and your eSafety check is valid for 42 days. If you have an Authorised Inspection Station (AIS) licence, any mechanic can give you a pink slip.
What Is a Blue Slip?
An unregistered vehicle inspection (UVI) is the official name for a blue slip. You will need one when you are first registering a vehicle on NSW roads, or re-registering a car that has had its registration lapse or been cancelled.
A blue slip does everything a pink slip does, plus an identity check. The inspector checks the vehicle identification number (VIN), engine number and compliance plate to make sure the vehicle matches the records and has not been reported stolen. Additional structural checks are also needed for repaired write-off vehicles.
Not all mechanics can issue a blue slip because of the identity component . You will need to go to an Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Station (AUVIS). These stations require a specific licence beyond the standard AIS accreditation.

Do I Need a Pink Slip If I Already Have a Blue Slip?
No. A blue slip is everything a pink slip is and then some. If you’ve just had a blue slip inspection to register your vehicle, you don’t need a separate pink slip on top of it.
However when it comes time to renew your rego next time (12 months later) you will need to have a pink slip at that point, if the car is over five years old. The blue slip is a once off inspection to get the car on the road. The pink slip is the yearly check that goes on.
When Do You Need a Blue Slip in NSW?
You will need a blue slip if any of the following apply:
You bought an unregistered vehicle. If the rego has expired or has been cancelled before you buy it, you will need a blue slip before you can register it in your name.
You are transferring a car from interstate. Vehicles coming from another state need a blue slip to be registered in NSW, even if they had a current roadworthy or safety certificate in the other state.
Your registration has lapsed for more than three months. If your rego is expired and it has been more than three months, you need a pink slip. You will need a blue slip to get back on the rolls.
The vehicle is a repairable write-off. If you’ve bought and repaired a written-off car, it needs to be inspected and pass a blue slip before it can be put back on the road.
You are registering an imported or custom-built vehicle. Any vehicle that has never been registered in NSW requires a blue slip.
