Blue Slip – AUVIS inspection when registering an unregistered vehicle and re-registering after a lapse of more than three months. They both check roadworthiness but apply to different situations, the blue slip covers much more. At A to Z Automotive Services we do inspections and the question we hear most often is a simple one: which one do I need? The answer depends entirely on whether the vehicle is currently registered. When it’s time to renew the rego on a car that’s more than 5 years old and already registered in NSW. The inspector checks the brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, lights, seatbelts, windscreen and body to make sure it’s still safe for another year. Your renewal notice will tell you if you need one. Costs, validity and the full checklist are all in our[pink slip NSW guide](https://atozauto.com.au/blog/pink-slip-nsw-everything-you-need-to-know/). ## When Do You Need a Blue Slip? **You’ll need a blue slip if:** - the rego has been expired for more than 3 months - the car has come from another state, territory or country - it has no number plates -  it’s a written-off vehicle that’s been approved for re-registration It covers everything a pink slip does, and then some. The inspector also checks that the VIN, engine number and compliance plate match the records, to make sure the car isn’t stolen or carrying the wrong identity. If the rego ran out more than 3 months ago, you need a blue slip before you can register it in your name, not a pink slip. You’ll also need an unregistered vehicle permit just to drive it to the inspection. **Bringing a car from interstate. **A roadworthy certificate from Queensland or Victoria doesn’t count in NSW. The car still needs a NSW blue slip before it can be registered here. **Modified cars. **Big modifications usually need a separate certificate from a licensed VSCCS certifier. A blue slip may also be needed to update the rego record after something like an engine swap. ## Do You Need a Pink Slip If You’ve Just Had a Blue Slip? No. The blue slip already covers the safety check, so you won’t need a pink slip to get the car registered. Twelve months later, at your first renewal, you’ll need a pink slip if the car is more than 5 years old. ## What Happens After Each Inspection? **After a pink slip: **the result goes to Transport for NSW electronically, and you can renew your rego online. It stays valid for 6 months. If the car fails and you get it fixed within 14 days, the re-check at the same station costs nothing extra. **After a blue slip: **you’ve got 42 days to use the report and finish registering the car with Service NSW. If it fails, you’ll get a report of what needs fixing before it can pass. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### My rego expired 2 months ago. Do I need a pink slip or a blue slip? A pink slip. You only need a blue slip once the rego has been expired for more than 3 months. ### Can any inspection station do a blue slip? No. Every station that does blue slips can do pink slips, but not every pink slip station is approved for blue slips. Check before you book, or call us and we’ll tell you what your car needs. ### Can I drive an unregistered car to its blue slip inspection? Not without an unregistered vehicle permit. You can get one from Service NSW, and it lets you drive the car to the inspection and back. ### Does a brand new car need a blue slip? Usually not. If the car is registered by the dealer, or you can show its entry on the Register of Approved Vehicles, a blue slip generally isn’t needed. ### Do I get a green slip or a pink slip first? It doesn’t matter which comes first. A green slip is your CTP insurance, and you need a current one, plus a pink slip if your notice asks for it, before you can renew. ### Is a blue slip more expensive than a pink slip? Yes. From 1 July 2026, a blue slip for a car costs up to $82, compared with up to $52 for a pink slip.
