Auto Electrician in Newcastle – Faults Found, Not Guessed

We find the actual fault instead of replacing parts until something works.

Electrical faults are the ones that send people round the bend. The car starts fine for a week, then it does not. The dash lights up like a Christmas tree and then clears itself. Something is draining the battery overnight and nobody can tell you what. These jobs get passed from workshop to workshop because they take patience and the right gear, and plenty of places would rather not deal with them.

That is the work we take on. We are a licensed auto electrician in Newcastle based at Cardiff, and we trace faults properly using wiring diagrams, a scope, and dealer level diagnostic equipment. We test before we replace. If your battery is flat every Monday morning, we run a parasitic drain test and find the circuit that is doing it. We do not sell you a battery and hope.

How We Work

From Symptom to Solution, Without the Guesswork

Auto electrical work is detective work. Here is the process we follow on every job, whether it is a flat battery or a fault that three other workshops have already had a crack at.

What an Auto Electrician Fixes

Almost everything in a modern car runs through an electrical circuit, so auto electrical repairs cover far more ground than most people expect. These are the jobs that come through our Cardiff workshop most often.

Starting and Charging Faults

If the car won’t start the fault is usually in one of three places and they require three different fixes. A battery that doesn’t charge at all. Problem with alternator not charging. A dead starter motor or one that’s demanding too much current. We don’t just swap parts so you replace what is actually gone. We test all three under load. We do all our battery replacements, alternator replacements and starter motor replacements in house.

Battery Drain and Flat Battery Problems

If the car sits for a couple days and goes flat then there is a parasitic drain somewhere. We connect the vehicle and begin circuit by circuit measurement of current draw until the culprit reveals itself. Usually it is an aftermarket accessory, a module that never sleeps or a switch stuck closed. This is the number one job we get asked to do after being told nothing more than “your battery is fine”.

Warning Lights and Fault Codes

Battery light, ABS light, airbag light, traction control, engine management. A warning light is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Before we quote we read all the stored codes in all control modules and see what the code really points to. Many lights are cleared, sold as fixed and they go right back on ours do not.

Wiring, Looms and Corrosion

Newcastle is a coastal area and the salt air is hard on wiring and connectors and earth points. We fix broken looms, rusty earths, battered insulation and dodgy connections. Rodent damage (you’d be surprised how much we see). Loom repairs are done properly, not scotch locks and electrical tape but soldered and heat shrunk joints.

Windows, Central Locking and Comfort Systems

Electric window drops and won’t go back up. Central locking 3 doors. Mirrors, seats, sunroof, trunk release, interior lights. These systems are typically a motor, a switch or a broken wire in the door harness where it flexes. All are repairable.

Accessory Fitting and Wiring

Reverse cameras, dash cameras, driving lights, tow bar wiring, dual battery systems, UHF radios and stereo work. with the right gauge cable and factory connectors where applicable and proper fusing. A lot of the electrical faults we’re called out to trace later are due to poorly wired accessories, so it’s worth getting them done right the first time.

We service most major brands including Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi.

Why European Cars Need a Specialist Auto Electrician

A modern European car runs dozens of control modules talking to each other over a CAN bus network. The window switch does not send power to the window motor. It sends a message to a module, which sends a message to another module, which operates the motor. When something in that chain fails, a generic code reader will tell you almost nothing useful.

That is where most auto electrical work on a BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Volvo, Land Rover or Porsche comes unstuck. You need software that can talk to every module, coding and adaptation capability for when a component is replaced, and someone who understands how these systems are meant to behave when they are working. Fit a new battery to a late model European car without registering it to the vehicle and you will be back with charging faults inside six months.

We have the diagnostic equipment and the coding access to do this work correctly, and we have been doing it on European vehicles for over fifteen years. If you have been told your car needs to go to the dealer for an electrical fault, get a second opinion from us first.

The Electrical Job Nobody Else Wanted

A fair share of the cars in our workshop have already been somewhere else first. That is fine. We are set up for the hard ones.

AUTO ELECTRICAL QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

We start with a diagnostic inspection to identify the electrical fault, then provide a clear repair quote before any work begins. Call us with your vehicle details, and we’ll explain what to expect.

Rates vary depending on the vehicle and the complexity of the fault. Instead of charging blindly by the hour, we diagnose the issue first and provide a clear quote for the required repair.

Most electrical faults need workshop diagnostic equipment, so repairs are completed at our Cardiff workshop. We also offer courtesy cars to help keep you moving.

A flat battery is usually caused by a worn-out battery, a faulty alternator, or a parasitic battery drain. We test the complete charging system to find the actual cause before recommending repairs.

The cost depends on your vehicle and the alternator required. We test the charging system first to confirm whether the alternator is actually the problem before recommending replacement.

Yes. We specialise in European vehicles and use dealer-level diagnostic equipment for BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and other European brands.
