Additional structural checks are also required for repairable write-off vehicles to ensure the repair work is up to standard.
A blue slip can only be issued by an Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Station (AUVIS). Not every mechanic has this accreditation so you need to check before you book.
When Do You Need a Blue Slip?
You need a blue slip in NSW if any of these situations apply to you:
Registering an unregistered vehicle. If you have bought a car and the rego has already expired or been cancelled, you cannot just renew it. You need a blue slip to register it fresh.
Transferring a vehicle from interstate. Moving a car from Victoria, Queensland, or any other state into NSW? Even if it had a valid roadworthy in the other state, you need a blue slip to register it here.
Re-registering after a lapse of more than three months. If your rego expired and you left it for more than three months, a pink slip is no longer enough. You need the full blue slip process.
Registering a repairable write-off. If the vehicle was previously written off by an insurer and has been repaired, it needs a blue slip to confirm the repairs meet safety standards before it can go back on the road.
Importing or custom-building a vehicle. Any car that has never held NSW registration needs a blue slip before it can be registered for the first time.
What Does a Blue Slip Inspection Check?
The inspection covers two areas: safety and identity.
Safety checks include:
- Brakes (pads, rotors, lines, handbrake)
- Tyres (tread depth, condition, correct size)
- Lights (headlights, indicators, brake lights, tail lights)

In NSW, the cost of a blue slip inspection is normally between $80 and $150. The price varies depending on the inspection station and the type of vehicle. Toward the higher end might be larger vehicles, trucks or cars with complex histories (write-offs).
This is the fee for the inspection. If your car breaks down and needs to be fixed that is a separate repair cost. Upon passing the vehicle, the inspector electronically reports the result to Transport for NSW and you get your blue slip clearance.

How Long Does a Blue Slip Last?
A blue slip is valid for 42 days from the date it was inspected. You have to get your vehicle registered in that window. The blue slip expires if you do not register the vehicle within 42 days and you will have to get a new one.

How to Prepare Your Car for a Blue Slip Inspection
Walking in prepared saves you time and money. Here is what to check before you book:
Make sure all your lights work. Headlights, tail lights, brake lights, indicators, reverse lights, and number plate lights. Replace any blown globes before the inspection.
Check your tyres. Tread depth needs to be at least 1.5mm across the full width of the tyre. All four tyres should be the correct size for the vehicle, and there should be no visible damage, bulges, or cracks.
Test your brakes. If the pedal feels soft, spongy, or the car pulls to one side when braking, get that sorted first.
Bring your paperwork. You will need proof of identity for the vehicle (previous registration papers, import approval, or purchase documentation). The inspector needs to verify the vehicle against official records.
Clean the VIN and compliance plate. If they are covered in grime or hard to read, the inspector cannot complete the identity check. A quick wipe down beforehand saves everyone time.
