Pink Slip NSW: Everything You Need to Know

Car Tips and Guides

General

Car AC repair

If your car registration is due for renewal in NSW, you’ve probably been asked for a pink slip. But what exactly is it, what does it check, and how do you get one? This guide covers everything NSW drivers need to know, including how long it’s valid, and how to avoid common fail points.

What Is a Pink Slip in NSW?

A pink slip officially called an e-Safety Check, is a roadworthy inspection required to renew the registration of most light vehicles in NSW. It confirms that your car meets minimum safety standards before it goes back on the road.

The inspection is carried out by an authorised mechanic who is licensed by Transport for NSW (TfNSW). Once your vehicle passes, the result is submitted digitally to the NSW Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) system, no paperwork required.

Most passenger cars, wagons, utes, and SUVs need a pink slip if they are more than five years old and are up for rego renewal.

What Does a Pink Slip Check?

During the e-Safety inspection, your mechanic will assess all critical safety systems, including:

  • Brakes — pads, rotors, lines, and handbrake function
  • Steering and suspension — components, geometry, and response
  • Tyres — tread depth, condition, and correct fitment
  • Lights — headlights, indicators, brake lights, and reversing lights
  • Windscreen and windows — cracks, chips, and visibility
  • Seatbelts — operation and condition of all belts
  • Exhaust and emissions — no excessive smoke or leaks
  • Body and chassis — no sharp edges or structural issues

If everything checks out, the mechanic submits your pass result directly to the RMS. If your car fails, you’ll receive a clear written list of what needs attention before a re-inspection can be completed.

How Much Does a Pink Slip Cost in NSW?

Pink slip costs in NSW are set within a government-regulated price range. At A to Z Automotive, we keep our pink slip pricing competitive and transparent.

How Long Is a Pink Slip Valid For?

Once your vehicle passes the e-Safety inspection, the pink slip is valid for 42 days. You must use it to complete your rego renewal within that window. If it expires before you renew, you will need another inspection.

This is one of the most searched questions about pink slips, so it’s worth planning ahead. Don’t wait until the last week of your rego period to book.

Pink Slip vs Blue Slip — What’s the Difference?

These are two different inspections for different situations:

  • Pink slip (e-Safety Check): Required annually for rego renewal on vehicles over 5 years old in NSW.
  • Blue slip (AUVIS inspection): Required for unregistered vehicles, vehicles from interstate, or cars that have been significantly modified. It is a more comprehensive inspection.

If your car is currently unregistered, you will need a blue slip not a pink slip to get it back on the road. A to Z Automotive is authorised to carry out both inspections.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need rego papers to get a pink slip in NSW?

No, you do not need your registration papers to get a pink slip inspection. The mechanic only needs your vehicle. However, you will need your rego papers later when completing the renewal through Service NSW or an authorised motor registry.

How long does a pink slip inspection take?

Most pink slip inspections take between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on the vehicle. If your car is well-maintained and there are no obvious issues, the process is quick. At A to Z Automotive, we handle digital RMS submission on the spot, so you leave with everything sorted.

What happens if my car fails the pink slip?

If your vehicle doesn’t pass the inspection, you’ll receive a detailed report showing exactly what failed and why. You don’t need to get it repaired at the same workshop, though many drivers choose to, for convenience. Once the items are fixed, you can return for a re-inspection. There is typically no extra charge for re-inspecting the specific items that failed, within a set timeframe.

Can any mechanic do a pink slip in NSW?

No. Only mechanics who are authorised by Transport for NSW and have the correct equipment to submit to the RMS eSafety system can perform a valid pink slip inspection. Always check that your mechanic is an approved e-Safety inspector before booking. A to Z Automotive is fully RMS-approved and has been performing pink slip inspections since 2009.
